CRIM week August 30, 2004

Saturday was the CRIM festival of races here in downtown Flint. The CRIM is a festival of foot races and a wheel-chair race held here in Flint for over 25 years.

Our hotel was the host hotel and headquarters for the race. We had thousand and thousands in the building through the week, in all as many as 14,000 or more. There were over 7000 in the 10-mile race alone. I was given the honor of praying before the thousands and thousands of spectators and participants gathered in the street at the beginning of the race.

Good Intentions and Good Sense

Once the older boys and I spent some time doing some odd jobs for a widow. She asked me to get gravel to create bases for some large concrete yard statuary.

Enjoy Life Now

Years ago I picked up a magazine on walking and hiking. On the cover was a silhouette of a lone hiker with a walking stick standing on a rock ledge over a picturesque valley filled with colorful trees. The magazine was filled with stories of adventures and pictures to go along with the stories. I thought about how nice it would be to explore some of those places some day with the boys. Hiking high ridges. Telling stories around a fire at night. Sleeping with the sound of the wild all around us. At the time Dan and Wes were not born. Kyle and Chuck were about eleven and seven years old. I closed the magazine and thought on that for a while. A plan began to form in my mind.

If you had a stack of one hundred dollar bills to give away you would not care if someone did not want to talk to you, you would just go to the next person.

What to Do When Life Hurts

Here is the simple outline of my message on Lamentations 3… “What to Do When Life Hurts.” A number of people have asked for the outline. I hope it nudges you closer to Jesus if you are going through any heartache.

God Bless You;

The Firefly Effect

My sweetest childhood memories are of simple things like the tire swing in the big oak out front, playing catch with my Dad, and swimming in the creek. Another of those simple things was chasing fireflies on the lawn as night fell on a summer evening. The bugs only had a small light but they were especially brilliant because of the dark backdrop of the night sky.

Taste and See August 8, 2004

We live in downtown Flint, Michigan. It’s really not the kind of place where folks chat over the backyard fence and swap garden produce and gossip. On the street in downtown Flint, people don’t usually speak to you until you speak to them. Sometimes they don’t speak to you even when you do speak to them. Sometimes what people say when they do speak to you makes you wish you hadn’t spoken to them. But sometimes the sun of humanity breaks through the clouds of anonymity even here in Flint. That happened this week.
