Years ago, when I was going through a season of reaction and resistance to my leadership in a church, my brother Nathan was helping with music. He was living at home and attending college. Nathan came to church one particularly difficult evening and he had a note for me from Dad. It was a simple passage of Scripture to read: Ezekiel 2:4-5. Dad quickly jotted it on the back of his business card and sent it my way.
Before I went out to preach that night I looked up the …

Classic re-post from 2002
If you know me you know I like to tell happy stories about good things. I like to tell stories of love and goodness. I make excuses for celebrations every day. I like to point others to God’s good gifts all around them. I find this especially easy to do when spring overcomes winter and when summer turns to autumn. Evidence of God’s goodness abounds in autumn. But sometimes even in the autumn heartache silences laughter and tears drown …

Tim Keller inspired me to preach a series of messages based on honset questions people have about the Bible and Christianity. His book The Reason for God got me thinking about it. This post is a link to my message on hell.

I want to recommend a book I have not yet read. I bought it the other day, but I promised our son Daniel he could read the book first. He is training for ministry in Grand Rapids–the home of Rob Bell (No Hell Rob Bell). Some of his classmates have been enthusiastic about Rob Bell’s heresy about Hell.
He’s been reading Francis Chan’s new book on Hell–Erasing Hell. As we drive along he keeps asking questions and reading portions of the book. He quickly read half the book even while …

This morning I came upon this thoughtful article about young people who are raised in the church, leaving the church during their post-high school years. It’s worth your time.
Somehow I have a feeling that young people are not leaving the church because we didn’t have enough rules. They are not leaving the church because we didn’t try to schedule enough “fun.” That is all much of youth ministry has been for the last 30 years. It’s been the Christian “Party Plan.” Now thousands don’t take the church or the …

Last weekend (Thursday night through Saturday morning) I spoke in Canada to 200 men from the Lighthouse Gospel Church in Port Burwell, Ontario. The meeting was at a campground on the north shore of Lake Erie near Blenheim. It was a perfect weekend for a campout. These men were hungry for the things of God and they have a great appetite for the Word. They insisted on me preaching a minimum of an hour in each session.
Pastor Henry Wiebe is the pastor there and has been there for about …

Standing in the yard across the street from Granville Cottage is a nine-foot tall bear sculpted with a chain saw. It’s pretty imposing and impressive and an interesting conversation piece.
A couple years ago our oldest son and his family came for a visit. I went out to the car to greet our grandson, little Kyle Kenneth. I got him from his car seat and started to carry him into the house.
“What’s that?” he said, looking wide-eyed at the bear in the yard.
“O, It’s just a bear,” I said. …

I hear a lot of people who complain about social media—you know—Facebook, Twitter, etc. I know social media can be used for bad things. I know many are suspicious social media are a waste of time and create friction between people. I’m sure they can and do… because the people who use them are sinners so they are capable of things like wasting time and getting into friction—but my personal perspective is different.
I like social media when it’s used right. I am into people. Sometimes I like to hole-up …
