When we face a foe so formidable that our life is threatened it is appropriate to cry out in desperation to God. Psalm 50:15 says “Call upon me in the day of trouble and I will deliver you and you will glorify me.” When I cried out to God in June of 2000 God gave me a level of self-control I have never known. Within six months I had lost 105 pounds. I am still experiencing that self-control today. Before I cried out I had to understand that my gluttony was a deadly sin. Only then did I cry out for God to deliver me.
If you want freedom, face the impossibility of your situation. Face your absolute dependence on God. Take your Bible and notice how often we are encouraged to cry out to God. Think how often you have tried and failed then cry out to God day and night for deliverance from the deadly habits that you have formed.
Resolve that when He does deliver you, you will glorify Him to everyone who asks, “How did you lose your weight?” You can tell them that you cried out to God and He gave you a new level of self-control.
My brother Nathan did this. Today he is very near his ideal weight. Another pastor friend just last week was able to eat one whole week just what he believed what God wanted him to eat and nothing more. He called to tell me that in one week he had lost eleven pounds and an inch in his waist.
Psalm 55:17 says; “Evening and morning and at noon I will pray and cry aloud and He shall hear my voice.”
