Do you believe there is such a thing as soul-thirst? I do. Deep down in the heart of every person is a thirst only Jesus can quench.
I once directed a Christian ministry housed in a sixteen-story hotel in Michigan. The hotel was built on the river. One morning one of the children was looking out over the river and said; “Oh, Dad, that guy just took a cup out and dipped it in the river and drank from it.”
There was a man sitting on the other side of the river. He looked like he was living on the street. We watched the man for a while and from time-to-time he did indeed drink from the river and it was not a clean river. It was not safe to swim in the river let alone drink from it. Lois talked us into getting some lunch and something nice to drink for the man. We took the food and drink to him and talked with him for a while about the One who is the Water of Life. It reminded me of something Jesus said one day:
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive – . John 7:37-39
You have a soul-thirst only Jesus can quench. If you try to quench it any other way it will make you sick and leave you sad and dissatisfied. Positions, possessions, accomplishments, experiences, vacations, false religion, sexual exploits, toys, gadgets, mini-kingdoms – none of these things can satisfy, only Jesus can do that.
