At least for a while I am the Village Parson again, even while I am directing an urban-based ministry. Sunday morning and evening we drove out to the village of Byron to assume me new duties as regular pulpit supply until they get their new pastor. The church is a beautiful red brick colonial. My morning message was: “How A Church Can Be More Than Just a Pretty Building.” In the evening we had communion and I preached on “Understanding Love in the Light of the Cross.” The people were very kind and listened attentively. I am going to enjoy our ministry there.

The Character Inn is a wonderful place to live. Something is happening all the time. As I write this evening I have just gotten in from evening church. The drive was beautiful. It was a perfect autumn day today. When we got in young people were sitting by the fire in the lobby playing a game. Last week some helium balloons were up in the roof and we didn’t know how to get them down. Dan and Wes said Nolan Brook, one of the Verity students, had a blow dart gun and he could shoot them down. He needed very little encouragement and all the balloons were gone from the ceiling.
