Garrison Keillor is a funny man, but I don’t think he has heard the call of the wild. What do you think?
What truly cheers me up through these dog days of summer is the thought that two old friends of mine are up north on a canoe trip in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and that I am not there with them. I am here, reading the paper, and if I wanted to go to a movie, I could go, and if I wished to use a flush …

In large parts of Mexico they do not stock the bathrooms with toilet paper. This is something you might want to know in case you ever need to go – . to Mexico. In the “How Embarrassing” Category: Lawn Chairs. Some lawn chairs are better than others. On the way to speak at a camp a couple summers ago I tried out a beach chair. It wasn’t very high-quality. I decided I would keep looking for a chair of a little higher quality. They just …

I grew up eating my mother’s version of goulash. After Lois and I married we used it to keep the kids full. If you look at them now, they are probably about thirty percent goulash. We all love it. When the children were small we would make a big vat of it for an evening meal. When we were done the kids would all pitch in on the clean-up.

Yesterday I was moving some books and stumbled across an old journal. A thirty-year-old journal. Lois and I were married in September of 1979. The first journal entry was the first of October.
“My first entry in this journal will be by way of introduction. I have been married a week short of a month and I am working my way through college and supporting my family at VanCleve Elementary in Troy, Ohio.
A few days before my marriage I was reading some short writings of my dad’s that he wrote …
