I love a good story. The world loves a good story. There are two kinds of “good.” Good as in interesting, and good as in morally sound and helpful. Much that is interesting is not good in the sight of God, good for you, or morally upright. There are thousands of really “good” books to read. These include every kind of literature, biographies, fiction, travel narrative, nature writing, essays, and dozens of other forms.
In all of my lifetime I may never read every word of every book I currently own. It’s one of the things that gets me out of bed in the morning. I spend a significant amount of my time every day writing–I like to think–good things. I want to influence my children and the people in our church to read good things that please the Lord and contribute to spiritual vitality.
Anything that stirs up sensuality, encourages exploration of dark and questionable things, dabbles with the occult, or violates the law of God should be set aside for something eternally edifying. We only have a few short hours before sunset to labor for Christ and influence people for good, so we should be continually focused on what is good and sound, and edifying, and morally upright.
One reviewer wrote: “…the story encourages children to give into their emotions and contains occult, pagan content, brief intense violence, and a heroine who desires to become a vampire. “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36).”
