Kingdom Adventures

In the early sixties my Dad and Mom were with a missionary organization called the Galilean Baptist Mission. It was a “home mission” organization. In other words, it was an organization that worked in North America, specifically in Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, I believe. The organization started churches and helped small, rural churches thrive. Dad was a seminary student – eager to preach and the serve the Lord. He and mom have maintained this passion unabated for nearly fifty years of ministry.

Back to my story. One weekend Dad’s assignment must have been quite north. We lived in Grand Rapids but the church we drove to must have been much farther north. It was early spring but on the way home we had to drive through a significant snow storm. It was an adventure getting home. My sister and I always enjoyed these adventures quietly because Dad was pretty intense driving in dangerous conditions. I think mom enjoyed the adventure, too in a subdued way.

Finally we arrived safely back in Grand Rapids were spring was in full bloom – the streets lined with daffodils and greening was under way. Monday morning I was out the door – off to school. It was sunny and warm and I would not even need a coat. To my delight there was still a layer of melting snow on the car. I took advantage of the situation, knowing that if I could get a couple snow balls to school and pelt someone with them no one would ever believe them on a warm, sunny, spring morning. It was the perfect crime. It didn’t work out too well, but the memory lasted.

I’m glad my parents enlisted early in kingdom efforts and showed us the delight and the adventure of serving the Lord, no matter what the weather. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

It is going to be cold and snowy this weekend. Don’t hibernate. Call someone and invite them to Evangel. It will warm your heart. Many years from now your kids will remember your hardy spirit and your love for Jesus and his work. See you tomorrow.
