Lives That Leap Into Flame
Two More Reasons to Like Detroit
A few weeks ago I was visiting Rob Hickey at his tidy shop. He has a furniture refinishing business. I knew I would enjoy lively conversation about the things of the Lord and he promised me a sample of Greek coffee. While I was there his son Steven came in. He told me about the Russell Street Deli. I said, “You and your dad and my son Chuk and I should go there together some time.”
He said, “There is a huge bookstore down there, too.”
Now he really had my attention. About a week later we all went there together. I had Curried Yellow Split-Pea Soup and a sandwich called Slim Charles. After lunch the Hickeys showed us to the bookstore. The store was the largest bookstore in the State of Michigan. It is a four-story warehouse building that used to be a glove factory. Every square foot of it was stacked with books. I immediately found a story collection by Harold Kohn that I didn’t already have. The book had been out of print for a long time. It was mine for only two dollars.
I have a new book a couple new friends and two more reasons to like living in the Detroit area.

Some day I am going on a road trip to Pennsylvania. I am going to toss the Wiggy Bag in the trunk with a tent and spend the night camping of the property of the Baldwins Book Barn.

I love books but I can’t imagine being willing to go to jail for them. Shelly Koontz did. I don’t think they have much crime in Iowa. They jailed Shelly because she failed to return a library book. It was due last April. She spent two hours in jail before posting $250 bond. You can buy a lot of books with that. Here in the greater Detroit area our criminals are usually not that well-read. (I just read this post to my daughters and they said that if they lived in Iowa they might have had to do jail time. I gotta’ go. We need to get the library).
Holly pointed out that you can have a legal abortion, but you can go to jail for unpaid library fines. Babies are not protected, but baby seals are. Something is messed up.
The Junky Car Club
In 2006 Mike Foster sold his luxury Infiniti G35. He now drives a modest 1993 model Toyota Camry. He wanted to give more. He wanted to make a statement against run-away consumerism.
