37 Years Ago Today-Solo Deo Gloria

lois-and-kenIt was 37 years ago today that Lois and I were married.We married at her little church in Ypsilanti. After a modest reception in the church basement we got in our lime-green Plymouth Duster with a broad white racing stripe and headed south down Interstate 75 toward our apartment in Ohio where we would begin our life together. We ate our first meal at Bob Evans in Lima as the sun set on our first day as a family. She had country ham. I had a bowl of chicken noodles. On those first autumn nights the cool breeze would billow the curtains and carry the aroma of growing things off the fields around us into our room. We learned to live together for the glory of God by the grace of God.

Today after 37 years, four sons, four daughters and eight grandchildren, I can say with deep gratitude and humility, Solo Deo Gloria—to God alone be glory. God has providentially protected us, provided for us, guided us… What David said is true, The Good Shepherd has led us beside still waters into green pastures, restored our weary souls, set an abundant table before us in the presence of our enemies. For his name’s sake he has led us in paths of righteousness. Even when we have passed through difficult times he has comforted us and chastised us as his cherished lambs. We can say with full hearts that our cup runs over with blessing. His goodness, and mercy have followed us all the days of our lives…. God has allowed us to have years of ministry with hundreds, even thousands of people and given us the desire of our hearts.

We are making plans for a special time together when our schedules allow us a couple quiet days. We will go somewhere beautiful. We will hold hands across the table as we have done thousands of times, our eyes will pool with tears and the memory of the great goodness of God and we will look down a bright winding road into a golden future because the path of the just is like a shining light that get brighter and brighter until the full light of dawn. Solo Deo Gloria.

Dale Sings, Too

Our son-in-law Dale McBride has a beautiful voice. On Good Friday this year he sang for the service. People love to hear Dale sing. He’s a powerful blessing as a son-in-law, he has the heart of a servant and he is very tender-hearted. We thank God for him every day. He’s also a deacon at Evangel.

God in the Mountains

In the summer of 2008 the girls did a tour of Eastern Kentucky singing and testifying of their love for Jesus. They sang in mountain churches, on the street, at events, in homes, and on a couple small Christian television stations. Deep in the mountains after driving for a few hours and fighting motion-sickness the girls recorded this beautiful song my Tracy Dartt, often sung by the McKameys. I will always love this video. Hope was so small then. Sometimes I wish I could freeze time, but that is not how the Great Designer made our world and He knows best.

I wanted to post this here so I would always have it. It’s memory I never want to lose.

Music at Granville Cottage

I miss having the kids at home. This is the kind of thing that happened here at Granville Cottage every once in a while. But if they don’t go their way they can never have what made our lives so happy and beautiful for a few years–their own loves and their own homes. I posted this here is that I will always have it.

It is our great delight that our children love and serve the Christ of the Cross.

Muffled Tones Behind the Door

Chuk and CC in the River

When Charles Kenneth Pierpont, who likes to be called Chuk, was a teen I gave him my guitar. He went into his room and closed the door and for many months all we could hear were muffled tones behind the door. One day I stood at the door and heard beautiful music. I thought it was the radio. It was Chuk.

“Chuk, play that for me.”

He did.

“Can you sing with that?”

He played and sang Michael Card’s beautiful song “Why”

“Chuk, will you play that for your mother?”

We went downstairs. He played it for his mother. All was quiet.

Lois said; “Chuk, that was beautiful.”

The next Sunday Chuk sang for the first time to the people gathered at church in Fremont.

Since then he has been making music. I found this old video he made when he was living at home in a little room he had made over into a studio. Chuk has a wife now. They have their little Laela and they have another daughter on the way in November. They have already chosen the name Aspen Gail. I wanted to post the video here because I never want to loose it.
