When Bud and Charlotte were young there was something missing in their lives and they didn’t know what it was. They sometimes left their three small children alone at night and went out dancing and drinking. Eventually they separated and then divorced. Charlotte had a man friend.

Plastic Pink Flamingoes
Plastic pink flamingoes, you must have seen them. They are ubiquitous. Standing in various shades of faded pink on one wire leg, unblinking sentries of the lawn. Are we to believe that these beautiful creatures of tropical climates have somehow migrated north and live as domestic pets in small towns all over the Midwest and in the suburbs of Chicago and Detroit and Cleveland? I have never liked them but compared to a real, live pink flamingo the synthetic imitation is especially pitiful.

Sometimes zeal can get you into trouble. I once organized a project to replace the roof on the home of our beloved visitation pastor, Clyde Afman. I knew the skilled men would need to be there to build the new roof. I recruited young men and older boys to do the work of tearing off the old roof.

Don’t Ignore Me
One evening our car broke down and we coasted into motel parking lot in Bowling Green, Ohio. We got a room for the night. I would repair the car in the morning. We had been waiting to eat in order to break up the monotony of our trip so the family was very hungry. Our first-born, Kyle and I hiked out in search of food. Our venture took us to a Burger King Restaurant. As we walked up the manager was just locking the door. Undiscouraged we walked around to the drive-thru window. The sign said it was open all night. I stood for a long time at the speaker waiting for someone to take my order. I couldn’t get the attention of the cashier.
