Here is the first of six stories about an adventure we took a few summers ago. It was memorable for all the wrong reasons. It not an experience any of us would want to repeat, but it’s a memory none of want to forget all-together.

It is April 5th this morning and there is a fine dust of snow on all the countryside around Bittersweet Farm this morning. A woke in the middle of the night. When I awaken in the night I’ve learned to listen quietly for the voice of God in my spirit. I may labor through the day among people or in the privacy of my study, but the “still, small, voice” often comes sweetly and clearly to my heart in the night or in the luminous glow of the moon behind the stark bare trees on a cold April morning.

I remembered this passage from Psalm 40:1-3 ESV:
I waited patiently for the LORD;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He drew me up from the pit of destruction,
out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
making my steps secure.
He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and put their trust in the LORD.

Then a quote from Thomas a Kempis came to mind; “Make no great account who is for thee or against thee, but mind only the present duty and take care that God be with thee in whatsoever thou doest. Have a good conscience and God will defend thee, for he whom God will help no man’s perverseness shall be able to hurt.”
These words from the song I Christ Alone leaped into my soul: “…no power of hell, no scheme of man will ever pluck me from His hand. ‘Til He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ I stand.”
