Warm Welcome
Sunday we were welcomed to our new church. What a happy day. We are all moved in to our new home in time for the Christmas season. The people are so friendly. The music is so beautiful. It is a very joyful, exciting time.
CHRISTMAS MUSIC
Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday night at 6:00 p.m. the Evangel Adult Choir and Children’s Choir will present a concert of Christmas music. Wondrous Gift. The church is beautifully decorated for Christmas. The Lord has even sent a manageable dusting of snow, so it really looks like Christmas around here.
BOOKCASES
Some of the retired men are building in floor-to-ceiling bookcases in my study at the church to house my library, so you can imagine how thrilled I am about that. It would mean so much to me if you would pray for me. It is a big, wonderful, humbling, job. I love being a pastor. The people here have been without a Senoir Pastor for about two-and-a-half years, so we feel very special and we have a very real sense of dependance on the Lord.
This is a photo of case #1. You can see a copy of Sunset on Summer there. If you want me to send you some of my new book for Christmas giving, let me know. Why go out there and fight the traffic when you don’t have to.
Christmas Efforts
The more Christmases I experience, the more I appreciate the Christmas efforts people make.
– Stringing lights in the winter wind
– Ringing bells outside the door of the department store
– Practicing music for Christmas services
– Christmas baking
– Cleaning the church building and clearing the lot of snow
– Writing Christmas messages and preparing Christmas lessons
– Finding Christmas gifts and wrapping them
– Mailing Christmas packages
– Making Christmas pilgrimages
– Organizing Christmas events
– Lighting Christmas luminaries all around the church
One bitter cold day I ran out with three of the boys to Sam’s Club for some things we needed. When we came out of the door we could hear live Christmas music. The Salvation Army had dispatched three men who were heartily playing Carols in a little brass trio. They were dressed in their uniforms and bundled up against the wind. Their breath was visible above their heads; their faces were red with cold. The faithful played carol after sacred Christmas carol that immediately warmed me down to the depth of my spirit.
I gave some cash to each of the boys for the Salvation Army Kettle. Across the parking lot the donut light was on at Krispy Kreme. We appreciate their efforts, too washing down pumpkin spice donuts with big swigs of nice, black coffee, the bold kind that pushes back the winter cold.
Merry Christmas to each of you. Make every little Christmas effort a little act of allegiance to Christ, a little offer of Christmas worship, done with a prayer on your heart. People notice. God sees. Your Christmas efforts matter.

Six Cars Back
It’s the day after Thanksgiving 2007 and I have never been more grateful. I’ve never had so much to be grateful for in my life. In May of this year we were blessed with our first grandchild. If you read the Stonebridge, you have already “met” wee Kyle. I hope the little lad is the first of many. In just a few short days I will begin my ministry at Evangel Baptist Church in Taylor, Michigan. I am an author. This morning I drove my Jeep to the post office in the lovely village of Hinsdale, Illinois and mailed the first two copies of my book to buyers. It would be hard to be happier. Boxes for Moving
This afternoon we are packing for our move to Michigan. We are in blissful chaos–climbing around boxes, looking for packing tape, listening to Christmas music, trying to “lighten our pack,” saying our good-byes, and looking forward to our new life and our new friends. Last night I packed a part of my library, shown here. (You will notice that “lightening my pack” does not include getting rid of any books).
I packed the other half of my library this evening. Dan and Wes have been a huge help. Everyone has been working together to get all of our humble belongings packed and ready to load for Michigan.
Getting an early start on Thanksgiving, here are some things that we are grateful for:
-Today is our daughter-in-law, Elizabeth’s birthday. We are very thankful for her.
-Charles has been asked to candidate at a church in Sister Bay in Door County, Wisconsin.
-Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Eve. I love Thanksgiving Eve. (Ask me about that some day)
-Dear, loyal, kind, patient, forgiving old friends, and cherished memories like yellow snapshots in the album of our hearts.
-New friends, new places, new challenges, and new adventures.
-Sunday morning a young man came to talk to me after church to tell me that he had become a follower of Christ that morning!
-I am a published author! Last night by book Sunset on Summer arrived from the binder!
-I am especially thankful that I can now devote all my time and energy to being a pastor once again.
-As far as we know, we are all healthy.
