Preachers sometimes get spoiled. I know I have been. I have been given baked goods, bags of potatoes, lawn furniture, dinners out, the use of a swimming pool for a week, popcorn, clothing, money, offers of free airline tickets, tickets to sporting events and concerts, garden produce and cuts of meat. Because we have eight children it’s common for people to offer us used clothing.

Super-Soaker
A friend was showing me through a barn on his property one day. It was a warm summer day. Kyle and Chuck were about eight and twelve at the time. The barn was beautiful. It hadn’t been a working farm in years. The lower part of the barn was used to store a sailboat if I recall. The upper part was swept clean and used for social gatherings. It was quite a place.

The Great White Shark
The early winter of 1994 was harsh. Our life had been disrupted that year by a difficult move and trying circumstances. Our family of nine was between homes, living in a small two-bedroom apartment waiting for our country house to become available. (We are still waiting for that). Wes was a newborn that winter. Most of our belongings were stored in a leaky garage twenty miles east of town. Our second car was stranded five miles west of town in our church parking lot. It was a difficult confusing time.

Circuit Rider
I have a friend who this spring set out on his third thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. Last summer Kyle and Chuck joined him for a week to hike a section. His name is Bill Newman, but Appalachian Trail hikers always go by a trail name. On the trail Bill is known as Circuit Rider. Circuit Rider is a fine Christian man with a heart for God and great enthusiasm for life. I still remember the animation and spirit of worship he showed in describing a night drive back to camp from the UP when he was treated to a display of the Aurora Borealis… the great phenomenon of the Northern Lights.

Jeremiah
A summer day stands out in my memory. We were swimming at the community pool in Baltimore, Ohio where my sister Melony, brother-in-law Jim and their family lived at the time. Kyle was five that summer. His cousin Jeremiah was six.
