How to Explain to People Why God Allows Evil

Why Does God Allow Evil?

Since God is good and he is all-powerful, why does He allow evil? Last Sunday evening I walked the people through some answers that I have given to people over the years as they have struggled with this question.

He Smiles All the Time

February 6, 2016 Filed Under: Village Parson

Smiling Rick Warren

When I was a boy I distinctly remember a faithful pastor who was used of God to help me and my family but he seemed to have a frown on his face most of the time. He had a visiting evangelist come to the church and they extended an invitation. Both of them stood there stone-faced and stealy-eyed–almost glaring… I went forward for prayer in spite of their frightening appearance, but I thought to myself, “If I am ever a pastor, I am going to smile, especially when I am inviting people to Jesus.”

When I was about 25 I was a youth pastor and I took a group of teens to Word of Life Island. That week I sat under the teaching ministry of Ron Blue from Dallas Seminary. His messages were convicting and inspiring and instructive and I noticed that he preaced with a smile on his face. I reminded myself. “I want to preach with a smile on my face.”

Well that was a long time ago. This week I spoke in a Christian school. I have a standing invitation to speak there. When I arrived one of the faculty members said; “I was so glad when I heard you were speaking today.”

“Thank you,” I said, “I was so glad to be invited.”

She said; “When they told us that Ken Pierpont was speaking today I said, Is he the preacher who smiles all the time?”

That put a smile on my face.

Here is a message my J. Ronald Blue preaching at Dallas Seminary. Take a look. Do you see what I mean? Smiles when he preaches.

Call From Danny Boy

February 5, 2016 Filed Under: Current Thoughts

Danny and KateDan called this evening. He is working in Oklahoma. He was sprayed by a skunk today so he ran over it with his Gator.

He also mentioned that he has some pretty serious itching because of exposure to poison sumac.

If you know him well, ask him where the affected spots are.

If you get sprayed by a skunk and you get poison sumac in really embarrassing places, well, you know, its a terrible, horrible, no-good, very-bad day.

When You’re Shaking Like A Leaf

Chuk, CC, Laela

It was 2008. Our second-born son, third-born child Chuk was a youth pastor in Door County, Wisconsin. One day I was thinking of him. I took his picture off the wall of my study and I was praying for him when I had a strong impression that his hands were trembling. I finished praying for him and called him.

“Hey, Chuk. You O.K?”

“Yea, I’m fine, dad.”

“Chuk,” I said, “I was just praying for you had I had the strongest impression that your hands were trembling. Are you O.K? Is there some reason that I would have an impression in my heart that your hands were trembling?”

It was quiet on the other end of the line for a while then Chuk said; “Well, last night I think I took too much medication for my alergies and I couldn’t keep my hands from shaking.”

We talked for a while and I told him to taper off his allergy meds… and how much I love him.

It was about this time I heard Rich Mullins song performed by Big Daddy Weave…. Mike Weaver… Hold Me Jesus….

At one point he sings “Hold me Jesus, I’m shaking like a leaf…”

I wonder how often God would speak into our hearts if we were continually attentive to his whispers… I’m not sure. This I know, your Father knows when you are shaking. You are not alone. You are never, never alone.
