Marissa’s Quinceanera

January 3, 2011 Filed Under: Current Thoughts, Faith and Family

On Thanksgiving weekend I was invited to participate in a beautiful Hispanic tradition for the Rolando Hinojosa family, the Quincenera for their daughter Marissa. It was a beautiful ceremony featuring Marissa’s faith and devotion to Christ and her family and friends love and devotion to her. Yesterday the local newspaper carried a feature article about it in the Sunday paper. Pretty cool, eh?

For years I have labored to teach families to take care to watch over their daughters and protect them morally–to guide them spiritually. The Hinojosa family is doing this is a beautiful way. At the fiesta there was a traditional dance. Growin’ up Baptist, I’m not real experienced at that, but this was honorable and pure. I found a tear in the corner of my eye a number of times through the day. It was a joyful, beautiful day. I even missed a chunk of the Ohio State-Michigan game to be a part of it, so you know it was big-time.

Hope and I attended together. It was a very pure and beautiful, a Christ-exalting celebration, which left me a little jealous that I was not Hispanic.

Here is the article with photos and videos.

Times are Hard…

I listen to WWJ 950 to get weather and news. The other day I heard this add for Walsh College, illustrating how tight the job market is these days. Made me smile.

Ideal candidate can work independently and telepathically. Requires 2 hours sleep, 3 on weekends, and possesses Masters degree, Nobel Peace Prize, and membership in at least 3 secret societies. Watch this Message

December 29, 2010 Filed Under: Current Thoughts

in 2009 John MacArthur preached to young people at the Resolved Conference about how to choose a pastor and how to evaluate a church. No message in years has influenced me and impacted me as much as this message. Today, while making hospital calls, I listened to it again. I embedded it here so you can watch it.

My heart longs to be a sanctified and sanctifying shepherd. This year I want to evaluate “my” church as the Chief Shepherd does, by the holiness of the people, not the number of people we have gathered or the amount of money they give. If you are a pastor are you a sanctified shepherd? Is your pastor deeply burdened with the holiness of the flock of God under his care?
