High in the Alps of Switzerland is a village called Champrey. It was there that Francis and Edith Schaeffer settled in the years when Europe was recovering from the devastation of W.W.II. Students traveled to Champrey from all over the world. They came to ski and hike in the beautiful mountains surrounding the village. The Shaeffers opened their home to travelers at no cost to offer shelter, meals, tea and conversation. Along with the hospitality they also offered stimulating dialog about Christianity.

Are You Under The Mercy?
Sheldon VanAuken’s Typewriter on which was written A Severe Mercy.
I have a small, tattered, beige paperback. It is one of my most treasured books. I read it again every year or so. I was so moved by the story in it that one night in 1987 I picked up the phone and called the author. He has since died. His name was Sheldon VanAuken. The book’s title is A Severe Mercy.

Eager to Hear
I am a social golfer, though the way I golf I’m not entirely sure it is socially advantageous to do so. When I golf it’s usually to spend time with people I love. Or to connect with someone new. Sometimes men can talk better and they are more likely to open their hearts to one another about important things if they are doing something with their hands.

Darin Morton
I met Darin in my study in about 1987. He wanted to marry one of the girls in our church. His girlfriend Wendy was a Christian. Darin was not. Marrying a believer to an unbeliever is a violation of Scripture. I told him so.

Harmonica
I was sitting in my study working on a project a couple weeks ago when the secretary put a call through from the hospital chaplain. There was a family in need. I man had died. The family had recently relocated here from the south. They were requesting a Baptist preacher. I drove to the hospital and met the family. A widow of about twenty minutes was trying to say good-bye to her husband.
