Coffee to the Glory of God

February 21, 2009 Filed Under: Current Thoughts

bible-and-coffeeI was reading John Piper’s practical book; “When I Don’t Desire God” and I found a humorous reference to coffee. Read on:

“The discipline to rise early is not as difficult as the discipline of going to bed. This did not used to be so. Before electricity and radio and television and the Internet, going to bed soon after dark was not so difficult. There wasn’t much to do. Today the strongest allurements to stay up and be entertained are against us. Therefore, the battle against weariness, which makes us drowsy as soon as we open our Bible in the morning, has to be fought in the evening, not just in the morning. When you have decided when the alarm will call you to prayer, then decide when you must go to bed so that you are not exhausted when the alarm goes off. If you need caffeine to keep you awake in the morning, I will leave that with your conscience. Maybe that’s why God created it. Staying awake to pray is certainly a better use of caffeine than staying awake for almost anything else.” (emphasis mine)

Praying Women

Things have been hard in Flint, Michigan for a long time. It has a rich and fascinating history, but it is a shell of what it used to be. It was a bold idea that coincided with the development of Auto World. Auto World failed and the hotel never prospered. It went on the market and a private donor purchased it and donated it to a Christian organization. [Read more…] about Praying Women

Cynics and Drought

February 19, 2009 Filed Under: Current Thoughts

In the summer of 1988 Central Ohio experienced the most severe drought in 50 years. We lived in a farming community there where many of the people depended on the abundance of their grain yields from year to year, just staying ahead of the interest on their payments to keep their farms and equipment, and preserve the way of life they loved. He’s in the Word!

February 19, 2009 Filed Under: Current Thoughts

A white pastor was a visiting preacher at a predominantly African-American church. In the front row was in impeccably-dressed woman with white gloves. Any time he would refer to a passage of Scripture she would stand to her feet and shout, “He’s in the Word!” He was delighted and started to look for new ways to get Scripture in the message. My brother Kevin added a tool to the site this morning that will make Scriptures jump out at you. I hope this gets us all in the Word more.

This morning the Desiring God blog had a simple and helpful article about the essence of sin that was helpful to me. Read it when you get a chance.
