Garrison Keillor is a funny man, but I don’t think he has heard the call of the wild. What do you think?
What truly cheers me up through these dog days of summer is the thought that two old friends of mine are up north on a canoe trip in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and that I am not there with them. I am here, reading the paper, and if I wanted to go to a movie, I could go, and if I wished to use a flush toilet, I could do that, too. But for the grace of God, I could be sitting on the ground, filthy, embittered, a homeless person, eating freeze-dried food and listening to the Master Woodsman tell you what a great experience you’re having and meanwhile the woods are not lovely, just dark and deep, and a cloud of mosquitoes has come out to avenge the white man’s colonizing of North America. I have been on canoe trips, I know what goes on. — Garrison Keillor

In October of 2005 we drove west on an adventure with the boys. In Colorado we drove up in to the Rocky Mountains and spent an afternoon in Estes Park. While the boys hiked around the village I stayed in the car and nursed by “out of joint” foot. I groaned and prayed and gritted my teeth, but while I was there I observed something that struck be as funny. Across the street was a man in a pleated skirt. He had long hair pulled into a pony tail. He was with a woman who’s hair was cut very short. She was wearing pants. When they reached the building he held the door for her. Things are getting so confusing these days.

Speaking of wild at heart, here is an interesting quote I ran across in my journal the other day: “It is not really a wilderness if there is nothing out there that can eat you.”

In large parts of Mexico they do not stock the bathrooms with toilet paper. This is something you might want to know in case you ever need to go – . to Mexico. If you need to go, bring your own bathroom tissue. I think it would be a good idea if youth groups from America took all the toilet paper they waste vandalizing their youth pastor’s house and donated it to missions. There you would have young people making a contribution to international good will, contributing to the beauty of the neighborhood, stimulating the economy, and keeping off the streets and out of trouble. And then maybe youth pastor’s wives wouldn’t be so grumpy from losing sleep.

In the “How Embarrassing” Category: Lawn Chairs. Some lawn chairs are better than others. On the way to speak at a camp a couple summers ago I tried out a beach chair. It wasn’t very high-quality. How do I know, you ask? I tested it. I set it down in the isle of the store and sat down on it. Immediately it collapsed on the floor. I decided I would keep looking for a chair of a little higher quality. They just don’t make lawn furniture like they used to. Quality being what it is these days I would recommend that you always test drive your lawn chair before you buy it. Somewhere someone is going to get a real laugh when they watch that little episode on the security tape.
